Regulations
Sila: All meditators are expected to follow 8 precepts unless medical reasons prevail.
Noble silence is to be observed at all times in the residential areas, where women are not allowed. One can interact minimally near the office and kitchen block. For any extended meetings/telephone conversations, please use the shed opposite the admin block.
Reading material: Students are allowed to keep books/tablets/laptops/phones without SIM for the purpose of reading, writing or listening to Dhamma talks. These are not to be used for entertainment or any other purpose.
SIMs/mobiles are to be deposited at the office and may be borrowed to make a phone call or access the internet, both of which activities should be restricted to the shed opposite the admin block.
Meals: Breakfast will be served at 6.30 am; lunch at 11 am. Tea time is at 5 pm.
Group sittings: There is one mandatory group sitting from 6-7 pm every evening. It is expected that people meditate at least 4 hours a day, either in their rooms or in the Dhamma Hall.
Optional: Morning chanting before breakfast. Guruji’s discourses and public talks are available for playing in the Dhamma Hall after 7 pm.
Registration
People wishing to stay at the Aranya should be aware that the self-dependent routine of the Aranya demands a level of maturity which qualifying to the criterion below may belie. As of now, only male students are invited. The institution reserves the right to refuse admission.
- For a stay of up to 3 days, the requirement is to have sat a one 10 day course, and to provide the name of an AT who knows them.
- For a stay of up to 10 days, the minimum requirement is to have sat a 20-day course; and to provide contact details of an SAT who knows them well.
- For an extended stay of up to 3 months of self-study and meditation the minimum requirement is for the student to have sat 2*30 day courses; and to provide contact details of a T, ideally their CAT, who knows them well. At the end of 3 months, one may apply for an extension.
- For service, the minimum requirement is to have sat a Satipatthana course; and to provide contact details of an SAT who knows them well.
Prospective students should fill up the attached form, with a beginning and end date of their proposed visit (not exceeding 3 months). Please attach a photoID also, To be photocopied and emailed to registration@vipassanaaranya.org
